Educational Objectives:

  • Shift the focus from local and statewide peer group to national and global peer group based on simple and recognizable standards.
  • Embrace alternative schools/systems that take advantage of the emerging life and bio science presence in the immediate region. While our county may not actively be participating in this regional opportunity, our students should be able to explore the tremendous opportunities that this represents.
  • Pursue virtual learning programs as a possible option to exclusively facilities based programs.
  • School Board administrative objectives:

    • OPEN ACCESSIBLE GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE.
    • Growth must pay for itself and impact fees should reflect the most current and real data available to deliver the proper calculation of this fee.
    • ALL information should be readily available and accessible. Online capabilities should be maximized in order to expedite and minimize administrative requests for information.
    • Televise all relevant meetings for the benefit of the working parents, teachers, and community that are unable to attend these meetings. Most elected officials that are televised will agree that it is not their favorite part of public office but overall it results in greater public policy discussions.
    • Develop real, proactive, school facilities planning. If the county knows where future growth will be occurring then the school board should be able to establish a plan that is complimentary to this plan. Schools should be paramount to community planning and not addressed when it is too late.
    • Create a community advisory board for school construction, financial priorities, and community impacts. This board should be comprised of recognized business and community leaders to help with the oversight and direction of the schools business the financial decisions and their affect on the community. The focus of the school board must be on education excellence.
    • Understand, evaluate, and show concern over the declining enrollment with increasing population. This has never happened in the history of Martin County and should biggest red flag with regard to the future and the direction of our county.
    • Budgets, spending, taxes, and fees should be tied to the real cost of providing an education rather than some function of property values. Our enrollment is down nearly 300 students while the budget is up over 35 million dollars for 2007/2008. There is no greater example of the disconnect between our private sector and our public sector than this.
    • Shift the tremendous amount of time and resources that go into the various fundraising efforts into learning opportunities or better uses of time. There is a fundamental problem when we see excessive fundraising efforts spent on traditional school related expenses while at the same time.
    • Community Service Project
